Kali's Story

Kali’s roots run deep in the Surinamese jungle. A descendant of runaway slaves, his ancestors forged a life of freedom, where the wisdom of the land surpassed the knowledge of books. Their legacy shaped Kali’s childhood, a childhood without formal education. Instead of classrooms, he learned to plant, to build, to provide.
Decades of relentless manual labor have marked Kali’s hands, but he carries the unfulfilled yearning for a different path. Illiteracy traps him at the bottom of the ladder, unable to escape the cycle of poverty. He dreamed of building a home – not just with wood and nails, but with the promise of better opportunities for his daughters, for his parents. But promises break, and dreams wither under the weight of harsh realities.
His 15-year-old daughter’s pregnancy – a heartbreak born out of despair – was a stark reminder of the consequences Kali desperately wished to shield his children from. Despite his own struggles, Kali’s heart breaks for others. The hungry children he feeds, the pregnant 14-year-old struggling to survive, they mirror his own family’s fight against a system that seems unyielding.
Even as he feels like a slave to circumstance, Kali dreams of a humble house in the jungle. A €5000 goal stands like a mountain against his meager wages. Yet, with every shared meal, with every helping hand, Kali nurtures the defiant flame of hope.
We understand that Kali’s struggle is echoed in countless others.
